National Association of Realtors Favor Veteran Loans

Feb 28, 2008  -  "The National Association of Realtors® testified today in Congress that the Veterans Home Loan Guaranty Program should continue to be a valuable asset in helping the nation’s veterans achieve the dream of homeownership in a way that is safe, fair and affordable...."

"NAR cited a 2004 study that found that 82 percent of first-time home buyers through the VA program could not qualify for a conventional loan. The report also found that 61 percent of those borrowers could not meet the downpayment or debt-to-income ratios required to qualify for an FHA loan...."

"NAR urged the House Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs to reform the Veterans Home Loan Guaranty Program so it can better serve many more veterans. NAR asked the subcommittee to make various program enhancements to give military families the opportunity to become homeowners. These enhancements include increasing the VA loan limits in high cost areas to 150 percent of conforming loan limits; easing the refinancing requirements and restrictions for veterans, especially those that have fallen victim to risky subprime loans; and offering permanent authorization for the guarantee of adjustable-rate mortgages and hybrid ARMs...."

Minority Home Ownership

February 25, 2008  -  “Homeownership is part of the American dream,” said 2008 NAR President-elect Charles McMillan. “As the nation’s leading advocate for housing issues, NAR is committed to removing disparities in homeownership and making the face of homeownership in this country look more like America.”

"According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, African Americans own homes at a rate much lower than Caucasians; in the fourth quarter of 2007, 47.7 percent of Black households owned their own home compared with 74.9 percent of Non-Hispanic White households."

"NAR supports policies and initiatives that further minority homeownership and has successfully partnered with organizations like the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (and real estate organizations representing African American, Latino and Asian American real estate professionals) to help raise awareness and identify and promote solutions that address minority needs, such as foreclosure prevention, housing counseling, and homeownership preservation."  reprinted from Realtor.org
